Description

Body depressed-spherical to ovoid, 4-8 cm long, 4-8 cm diameter, solitary, central spines usually absent, very rarely up to 4, of which one is hooked.
Flowers infundibuliform to campanulate, weetish fragrance, yellow cream, rarely pink, with beige, brownish, greenish, or violet midstripes, 2-2.5 cm long, 1,5-3 cm wide.
Flowering period: April-May.

Distribution

Colorado Plateau. Endemic to Indian reservations in Colorado and New Mexico at 1,200-1,800 m altitude. Associated with Sclerocactus parviflorus, Echinocereus fendleri and Opuntia polyacantha.

Sclerocactus mesae-verdae is endangered and is included in Appendix I of the Wshington Agreement on the Protection of Endangered Species.

The specific epithet refers to the Mesa Verde nearby the type locality.
